The View From Above: Thoughts to Help With Everyday Life

A Good Inheritance

I really like this verse.

It has spoken to me and encouraged me for many years, and it once again stood out during my devotional Bible reading this morning.

Scripture Focus

Psalm 16:5-6

“O Lord, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Yes, I have a good inheritance.”

This passage beautifully communicates the goodness of God and His benevolence toward our lives.

He thinks good toward us.

He has determined a pathway of blessing and favor.

He desires what is best for His children.

Most importantly, He Himself is our inheritance.

Our inheritance is not ultimately defined by money, possessions, or earthly success.

Our inheritance is God Himself.

The imagery of this passage is that God has marked out the very best portion of the land and graciously given it to His people.

Another translation expresses it this way:

“The Lord is the portion of my inheritance, my cup [He is all I need]; You support my lot. The boundary lines of the land have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me.”

Life will always have its struggles, problems, disappointments, and stresses.

Yet in the middle of all those realities, God has placed us in a position of favor.

He continues to guide us into the fullness of His goodness.

That is our inheritance.

An inheritance is intended to provide an advantage, to be a blessing, and to help us along the journey.

How much greater, then, is the inheritance that God Himself has given us?

His presence, His grace, His guidance, and His promises are treasures that can never be taken away.

Today’s Challenge

Take time today to meditate on your inheritance in Christ.

Instead of focusing on what you may lack, thank God for what He has already given you—His presence, His favor, His grace, and the promise of eternal life.

Remember that the greatest inheritance you will ever receive is not something God gives.

It is God Himself.
