Pursuing Peace in Our Relationships

Our biggest problems are relational.

That may not be true for everyone, but it certainly is for many—and perhaps for you.

Conflict, offense, disagreements, misunderstandings, neglect, and wrong perceptions all contribute to the problems we experience in our relationships.

Then there is how we react to it all.

Anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, and ill will take a tremendous toll on us physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

Sometimes we fail to connect the dots between these issues and the lack of joy and peace we experience in our lives.

Inner peace is often disrupted when there is a lack of peace in our relationships.

That is why the Bible encourages us:

Scripture Focus

Romans 14:19

“Therefore let us pursue the things that make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.”

These words were written to believers in Rome in the midst of conflict.

The responsibility of every Christian is to pursue peace wherever peace is needed.

Hebrews 12:14

“Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.”

Apparently, there is a great deal riding on this.

It even affects our relationship with Jesus.

We cannot be thoroughly right with God while remaining out of sorts with our fellow man.

It is our responsibility to strive for reconciliation, harmony, and love in all of our relationships.

Act swiftly.

Do not allow conflict to linger without making every effort to pursue peace.

Jesus Himself taught us:

Matthew 5:23-24

“Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”

Reconciliation is so important that Jesus placed it ahead of presenting our offering.

Healthy relationships honor God and strengthen our walk with Him.

Today’s Challenge

Take time today to examine your relationships.

Is there unresolved conflict?

Is there someone you need to forgive, encourage, or seek reconciliation with?

Don’t allow offense or misunderstanding to linger.

Pursue peace.

As much as it depends on you, make every effort to live in harmony with others and reflect the love of Christ in every relationship.
