The Great Names of Our God
Today my meditations fell upon the names of God, the various names Jesus is referred to.
Those names describe who He is…Beginning with ‘God is love’.
The names describe His character, what He does, what He thinks about us…What His hopes and aspirations are for each of our lives.
They describe His eternal majesty, glory, holiness, and righteousness.
Here are just a few…This should instill a sense of awe and wonder about how great and good our God is.
He is:
Jehovah-Jireh (The LORD Will Provide), Jehovah-Rapha (The LORD Who Heals), Jehovah-Nissi (The LORD My Banner), and Jehovah-Shalom (The LORD Is Peace).
These names highlight God’s provision, healing, victory, and peace.
Jehovah-Rohi (The LORD Is My Shepherd), Jehovah-Shammah (The LORD Is There), and Jehovah-Tsidkenu (The LORD Our Righteousness).
One name can’t contain the full meaning of all that God is…these names underscore His guidance, omnipresence, and righteousness.
Jesus (Yeshua) means “The Lord saves,” while Christ (Messiah) signifies the Anointed One, and Immanuel means “God with us.”
YES! God with us and what a miracle that is to behold. That Jesus Christ would identify with us, who were the chiefest of sinners.
Logos (The Word) represents Jesus as God’s ultimate expression, He is the living Word of God.
Then there are the divine names: Son of God, Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, Son of Man, and the Lamb of God.
Jesus used metaphors to describe Himself: The Bread of Life, Light of the World, and True Vine.
All these are complemented by prophetic and authoritative names like Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Lion of the tribe of Judah.
Wow, all that?!
YES! He is all that and more.
One of my all-time favorite names of God is found at the very end. The final chapter in the Book of Revelation.
How is Jesus going to identify Himself?
Lord of Lords? No, King of Kings? No, Mighty God?…No.
Revelation 22:16
“…I am the Root and the Offspring of David…”
Wait a minute, that is what you want to be known as?
David did some pretty bad things…He sinned, his sin hurt a lot of people…he had moments of extreme selfishness when he completely dismissed the commandments of the Lord.
And Jesus says?…YES!
That is how I want to be identified. That is My name.
I am identified with every sinner…All who have done wrong and forsaken the Lord.
Jesus died for them…they are who He is all about.
His name…forever etched in the heart of everyone who calls on the name of the Lord, no matter how egregious the sin, how far you may have fallen.
I find great comfort and I discover new avenues of revelation when I consider and meditate on the names, the great names of our God, and I hope you will too when you ponder and consider all the above.
