The Lord's Day: A Day of Expectation and Revelation

Today of all days, we should have good expectations for the good that God will do in each of our lives. We set time aside, as God commanded us to do, so that we can focus solely on Him. The Bible calls it a day of rest, the Sabbath, the Lord's Day, and it is a very necessary feature of our Christian life.

You cannot and must not be about the business of life 24/7. God recognized that is precisely what we would do if left to ourselves. So He commanded this day of rest. We are supposed to pause from the business and busyness of life in order to recharge our physical and spiritual batteries.

The Lord's Day should not just be another day for your work and pleasure. The term 'The Lord's Day' denotes ownership. It's a day that belongs to God, and we need to acknowledge that and yield it to Him for the advance of His will in our lives.

John was on the isle of Patmos, imprisoned because of his testimony for Jesus Christ. Yet, he knows what day it is... not every day is the same to him, even though he's on a prison island, and what day it is really wouldn't matter to anyone else. Except to him, it did:

[Revelation 1:10-11]

"I was in the Spirit on THE LORD'S DAY, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, saying, 'I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,' and, 'What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.'"

While in prison on 'The Lord's Day', God began to show him what was to come upon the earth in the last days. That is the day that God chose to visit him. He would have already been in prayer, praising and worshiping God on this particular day. The day that belongs to God and John is 'in the Spirit'. So too should you and all of us be today.

It's not to say that nothing spiritual happens on any other day... it does. We pray daily, read the word daily... we strive to obey and please God every day of our lives. Today, however, we push the pause button on every other pursuit but those that pertain to God and our relationship with Him.

We prioritize assembling together with other believers as the church of Jesus Christ. We sit under the ministry of our pastor to hear God's word as it pertains to our lives. It's a day God has the opportunity to speak to us in a unique, powerful, and personal way. The ministry that flows from the church and those who minister to us are one of God's great gifts to our lives.

The Lord's Day is a day that provides opportunity for spiritual growth. It's a day of revelation where God has our attention and therefore can speak to us in a unique way. I have great expectation for what God is going to do today. I don't know all that He's going to strive to accomplish in my life... but the day is His, I'm acknowledging His ownership... so therefore I'm expecting good things to occur and so too can you.
