The View From Above: Thoughts to Help With Everyday Life

The Power of Your Example

Could you be a better example?

That matters because people are watching.

We are going to be held accountable for the kind of example we set and the impact it has on others. All of us, whether proactive or passive, are influencing others—for good or for bad.

We should think seriously about this.

First, let’s consider the negative side of our example.

Scripture Focus

1 Corinthians 8:9

“But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak.”

There are things we may do that are not sinful or morally wrong in themselves, yet they can become a stumbling block to someone else and make their walk with God more difficult.

For example, you may call yourself a Christian but be inconsistent in your church attendance. You may think it has little effect on your own life, but if someone follows your example, they may suffer spiritually because of it.

A stumbling block is any action, attitude, or lifestyle choice that leads another believer into sin, compromises their conscience, or weakens their faith.

Romans 14:13

“Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way.”

While something may be permissible for you, it becomes a stumbling block when it causes a spiritually weaker brother or sister to stumble.

We must think about that.

We cannot live selfishly.

We should always consider how our lives are affecting those around us.

Then, of course, there is the positive side of our example.

The Apostle Paul said:

1 Corinthians 11:1

“Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.”

Paul was boldly saying, “Follow me as I follow Christ.”

He was setting an example that he knew was worthy of following.

Watch my life.

Live for God as I live for God.

If you do, you will prosper in your Christian walk.

Paul accepted full responsibility for his example, knowing that he could be a positive influence, an encouragement, and a help to those around him.

Peter reminds us of the greatest example of all.

1 Peter 2:21

“For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps.”

Jesus left very large footprints.

We know exactly what to do in every situation.

Love and forgive when you are offended.

Do not allow anger to gain a foothold when you are wronged.

Teach.

Help.

Build up.

Encourage.

Edify those around you.

Jesus left footprints for us to follow.

He lived a righteous and perfect life without sin, and we should aspire to live with that same spiritual integrity.

Today’s Challenge

Take time today to examine the quality of your example.

Are you living with others in mind?

Do you consider how your attitudes, decisions, and actions affect those around you?

People are watching.

Choose to leave footprints that point others to Jesus Christ.
