Throwing the Switch: Escaping Hopeless Desperation

Have you ever been at the end of yourself... nowhere to turn, nowhere to go, and there's nothing you can do? At least that's how life can make us feel sometimes. We feel isolated and alone. No one understands, and I'm not sure anyone really cares. We are more desperate than we have ever been, and the future looks very bleak. I find myself just exactly in that place sometimes. Life plays tricks on us; the devil drives the agenda of our thoughts and takes us to a place of HOPELESS DESPERATION.

Of course, all the above contradicts our relationship with Jesus Christ, His love for us, and His word and His promises. When we let go of faith and hope... and allow ourselves to be driven to the above-described very dark place, it can seem like it's all over, things won't and can't change... and we wonder, can God help me, will He... am I destined to drift alone through this valley I'm in?

What we need to do is SNAP OUT OF IT! I'm not trying to oversimplify your situation, but snap out of it, you must. That is the power you really do have. You control your thoughts... sometimes we are choosing doubt, fear, unbelief, and confusion when, in fact, we can return to hope, love, confidence, and faith in our God who is ever faithful to help us in our distress. This might be a good time to drop to your knees, I mean right now... repent of your wrong thinking, your doubt, your second-guessing God's love for you, and return to His loving arms.

The Example of Asaph

Asaph is chief musician and worship leader in the House of God... He knows God and knows how to praise Him... and then he slides into very wrong and harmful thinking:

[Psalms 73:2-4] "But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; My steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the boastful when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no pangs in their death, but their strength is firm."

His situation is dire, and he's observing wicked people prospering, and he's thinking; 'What's the point?... I'm trying to do right and here I am struggling while all these people who are doing wrong are more blessed than I am.'

Fortunately, he didn't stay there very long... a few verses later, he goes into the house of God, and one of those now moments of revelation occurs.

[Psalms 73:17] "Until I went into the sanctuary of God; Then I understood their end."

He quit feeling sorry for himself and realized the truthfulness of God's love and care of his life. Perhaps we need such an epiphany today. Wrong thinking can change in a moment... One moment dark... then light, one moment hopelessness and despair, and in the next moment, faith restored.

Throwing the Switch

What you have to learn to do in such moments is throw the switch. That's what you do when you enter a dark room; light comes in an instant. If your thoughts don't reflect faith, if you doubt God's love, if you're even thinking of quitting... STOP, judge those thoughts, and return to a biblical frame of mind governed by the truth of God's word and who He is.

[2 Corinthians 10:4-5] "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ..."

Put that into practice, today, right now, and every day, and victory will come.
