Today’s Prayer

April 3, 2004

Today’s Prayer: [Part 1] E.M. Bounds said; ‘To pray is the greatest thing we can do…’ That’s quite a statement and if true we need to think about it. If prayer is the greatest thing we can do, how much time, care, discipline and diligence to we apply to it. If you’re going to put something in the single category of the greatest things we can do then you better be giving your all to it. A professional athlete believes the greatest thing he or she can do is win a championship and look at the level of sacrifice they are willing to offer in order to achieve it. The greatest thing many businessmen can do is be successful, make a lot of money, secure wealth and live a luxury lifestyle and they are willing to give their all to that end. The greatest thing for many others can be much more substantive. People want to do good, serve their fellow man…people in the medical profession are striving to find cures for disease and believe that’s the greatest thing they can do. All of us have something in that category. I wonder what you would put there and it could be something very good. If it isn’t prayer and connecting with God we may be falling short of the greatest thing we can do. What is higher, greater and more of an accomplishment than meeting with our Creator, the One who made us and has a perfect plan for our lives. To interact with God on a personal level…to be able to talk to Him and He to us…to receive daily more of His virtue, presence and spirit in our lives…I really can’t think of anything greater than becoming more like Him daily in prayer. John the Baptist said; [John 3:30] “He must increase, but I must decrease”. That’s the greatest thing that could happen and that occurs in prayer. It really doesn’t take much of a search of Scripture to discover that prayer really is the greatest thing we can do; [Matthew 21:22] And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive." [Psalms 107:28-30] “Then they cry out to the LORD in their trouble, And He brings them out of their distresses. He calms the storm, So that its waves are still. Then they are glad because they are quiet; So He guides them to their desired haven.” Prayer accomplishes so much, all that needs to be accomplished…it’s the greatest thing that we can do! Tabitha was dead, the greatest thing that Peter could do was pray; [Acts 9:40-41] “But Peter put them all out, and knelt down and prayed. And turning to the body he said, "Tabitha, arise." And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. Then he gave her his hand and lifted her up; and when he had called the saints and widows, he presented her alive.” Please keep this in mind today…WHEN YOU PRAY YOUR ARE DOING THE GREATEST THING YOU CAN DO!
