YOU NEED TO GET OVER YOURSELF! — Part 2
My pastor, Pastor Harold Warner, has always said that his wife Mona has a favorite saying, and that is:
“You need to get mad at the devil!”
My wife Renee also has a favorite saying, and that is:
“You need to get over yourself!”
Getting over yourself is a challenging accomplishment and will be one of your greatest achievements in your life.
We spend way too much time fixated on ourselves…everything about us.
We’re not happy, you hurt my feelings, I’m frustrated because I’m not getting my way…this is too hard serving God, and so on.
Such is the language of those who haven’t gotten over themselves, and everything is about them.
Can’t get past.
We live on a planet called “Myself,” and we expect everyone and everything to orbit around us.
Everything and everyone has to please us.
Those living on the planet of Myself are hypercritical of everything and everyone.
Constantly complaining.
We can be mean, nasty, and impolite…but no one can be that to us, because we live on the planet of “Myself.”
Everything has to satisfy our expectations, and if they don’t, we’re hurt, upset, and angry.
Hence my wife’s wisdom:
“Get over yourself.”
What you need to do, we all need to do, is to take the first available transportation and get off the planet of Myself!
Have you heard or do you remember the Beatles song, written by George Harrison, “I Me Mine”? It really captures this sentiment.
Even an unsaved rock band understands!
They should have incorporated Renee’s line…
“It’s time to get over yourself.”
Jeremiah was thinking about taking up residence on the planet of Myself.
It’s so hard serving God, and I need some “me time.”
Jeremiah 20:8–9a
“For when I spoke, I cried out; I shouted, ‘Violence and plunder!’ Because the word of the LORD was made to me a reproach and a derision daily.
Then I said, ‘I will not make mention of Him, nor speak anymore in His name…’”
He’s getting dangerously close to making his calling about himself.
Thank God that was a momentary glitch, and he never followed through…
Verse 9 finishes with:
“But His word was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not.”
Jeremiah righted himself, and Renee didn’t have to say to him:
“Get over yourself!”
Can I also suggest that Jesus had to do the same?
Jesus got over Himself in the Garden of Gethsemane.
He had to, as do we all.
Luke 22:41–42
“And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, saying, ‘Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, NOT MY WILL, but Yours, be done.’”
This wasn’t about Him…it was about us and what His love for us demanded He do on our behalf, which meant the cross.
If He was living on the planet of Myself…He never would have gone to the cross.
How much do we avoid what we should be doing because we think it’s too hard and costs too much?
How often are we reacting to life from a totally selfish position?
It’s time for all of us to get over ourselves and live a far less selfish existence.
1 Corinthians 10:24
“Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well-being.”
