YOU NEED TO GET OVER YOURSELF! — Part 4

My pastor, Pastor Harold Warner, has always said that his wife Mona has a favorite saying, and that is:

“You need to get mad at the devil!”

My wife Renee also has a favorite saying, and that is:

“You need to get over yourself!”

Isn’t life really about more of Jesus and less of ourselves?

John the Baptist said:

John 3:30–31

“(Jesus) must increase, but I must decrease. He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.”

Can that be said about your life?

Is Jesus Christ above all…Do we love Him supremely and are we poised to do always what is pleasing to Him?

Increasing Jesus and His will for our lives is hard…decreasing ourselves is harder.

We have to get over ourselves.

Do you know what that actually means?

It means dying…dying to self and sometimes self-interest.

It was getting close to the time John the Baptist would be stepping aside and allowing Jesus to have preeminence.

Thousands were following John…His preaching was inspiring and challenging people, they were getting baptized by the thousands.

Nothing like him, a prophet of God, had been seen for 400 years.

He was gaining in popularity, he had devoted disciples.

He was the man of the hour fulfilling God’s purpose.

He was center stage in the unfolding plan of redemption.

Jesus said:

Matthew 11:11

“I assure you and most solemnly say to you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist…”

Well, it’s time for him to get off the stage, step aside, and stand down.

He will have no more significant influence after Jesus’ appearance.

“He must increase, I must decrease.”

It’s time for John the Baptist to follow Renee’s edict:

“Get over yourself…”

Step aside and decrease.

What a challenge, after all the attention and focus on himself.

This is where many fail, and it is why Renee’s favorite saying, “Get over yourself,” is so significant and important.

A detachment has to occur…from the primary focus of our lives being on ourselves to the primary focus of our lives being on Jesus.

What needs to happen to self?

Well, to put it plainly, clearly, and succinctly…

Self needs to die.

The Apostle Paul put it this way:

1 Corinthians 15:31

“I affirm, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I DIE DAILY.”

My Lord’s interests are above my own, the will of God, and what is pleasing to Him is my chiefest desire…so, therefore, I die daily!

Die to self and self-interest when they conflict with what God wants for my life.

All of us would do well to consider this little piece of wisdom today.

Too much of ourselves…and it’s interfering with what is in the best interest of advancing the will of God in my life.

Getting over yourself makes room for Jesus to work in your life.

That’s what John the Baptist did; he and his own self-interest got out of the way so that Jesus could now take center stage.

Let’s accept Renee’s challenge and get our eyes off of ourselves and point them where they belong: on Jesus and serving others.

Stop making life only about yourself.

When you do, life becomes so much more pleasant.

Trying to serve God without dying to self makes for a miserable existence.

You’ll always be conflicted.

Settle it once and for all as John the Baptist did (“Jesus must increase, I must decrease”)…as Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane on the eve of His betrayal, trial, and crucifixion:

“Nevertheless, not My will, but Your will be done.”

So stop griping, complaining, and being so critical…and follow Renee’s wisdom and GET OVER YOURSELF!

Once and for all:

Mark 8:34–35

“When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, ‘Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.’”

Pastor uses a memorable illustration—the planet of Myself—to describe self-centered living, then turns to Jeremiah, Jesus in Gethsemane, and the biblical call to consider others before ourselves.
